![]() ![]() Hanna-Barbera founders and chairmen William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, as well as veteran animator Friz Freleng, taught Seibert how the shorts of the Golden Age of American animation were produced. Seibert's idea for the project was influenced heavily by Looney Tunes. Seibert later described his hope for an idealistic diversity as "The wider the palette of creative influences, the wider and bigger the audiences." The diversity in the filmmakers included those from The company started taking pitches in earnest in 1993 and received over 5,000 pitches for the 48 slots. With Turner Broadcasting CEO Ted Turner and Seibert's boss Scott Sassa on board, the studio fanned out across the world to spread the word that the studio was in an "unprecedented phase", in which animators had a better idea what cartoons should be than executives and Hanna-Barbera supported them. According to Seibert, quality did not matter much to the cable operators distributing the struggling network, they were more interested in promising new programs. Although a project consisting of 48 shorts would cost twice as much as a normal series, Seibert's pitch to Cartoon Network involved promising 48 chances to "succeed or fail", opened up possibilities for new original programming, and offered several new shorts to the thousands already present in the Turner Entertainment library. Seibert wanted the studio to produce short cartoons, in the vein of the Golden age of American animation. What a Cartoon! creator Fred Seibert at Vidcon 2014.įred Seibert became president of Hanna-Barbera Cartoons in 1992 and helped guide the struggling animation studio into its greatest output in years with shows like 2 Stupid Dogs and SWAT Kats: The Radical Squadron. Following Fred Seibert's departure in 1997, Sam Register took control of the show in 1998, and by 2000, rebranded it into The Cartoon Cartoon Show, with more Cartoon Network originals being spawned from the showcase, including Sheep in the Big City, Grim & Evil (consisting of The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy and Evil Con Carne), Whatever Happened to. Once it had several original shorts, those became the first Cartoon Cartoons. ![]() The series is influential for helping to revive television animation in the 1990s and serving as a launching point for the Cartoon Network animated television series Dexter's Laboratory, Johnny Bravo, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Cow and Chicken, I Am Weasel, and The Powerpuff Girls. During the original run of the shorts, the series was retitled to The What a Cartoon! Show and later to The Cartoon Cartoon Show until the final shorts aired on August 23, 2002. The premiere aired alongside a special episode of Cartoon Network's Space Ghost Coast to Coast called " World Premiere Toon-In", which features interviews with animators Craig McCracken, Pat Ventura, Van Partible, Eugene Mattos, Genndy Tartakovsky, and Dian Parkinson. What a Cartoon! premiered under the World Premiere Toons title on February 20, 1995. Three of the cartoons were paired together into a half-hour episode. Each of the shorts mirrored the structure of a theatrical cartoon, with each film being based on an original storyboard drawn and written by its artist or creator. The project consisted of 48 cartoons, intended to return creative power to animators and artists, by recreating the atmospheres that spawned the iconic cartoon characters of the mid-20th century. The shorts were produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions by the end of the run, a Cartoon Network Studios production tag was added to some shorts to signal they were original to the network. I hope this heps making the point accress that static is generally a bad idea, unless previously stated conditions and maybe some other exceptions that I didn’t think of. Leaving apart the gazillions issues that arise from using this as is (time zones etc), if any logic of your code depends on the current time and you got it from DateTime. Now, you cannot test it (yes I know that you can use Fakes which are super cool but you should use them for testing in legacy code, not new code that you are writing). ![]() Let’s take another simple but compelling example: DateTime. Now, the nemesis of testable code. If the Singleton writes to a database, your test code will do so too. The second one is easy too: by not using an abstraction, you cast in concrete the behaviour of your code and make it impossible to change it for testing purposes. The first one is easy: most of the times, a singleton is a central access to a resource - a database, some logging tool, the network… That is the definition of an external dependency, which you definitely should not depend on directly but use through an abstraction ( interface or abstract class). You have a dependency on another concrete class.I’m fairly certain Jon would not recommend you to use the Singleton in the calling code but instead to have it injected behind an abstraction, which is exactly what he has done with NodaTime’s IClock and SystemClock. Side note: although Jon wrote that Singleton, it is more of a demonstration on how to do it in C# than a recommendation to use it. A method performing an addition would be a good example of something that can be static, while accessing a database or logging is not. I allow myself to use static only when the method or property has no side effect whatsoever. If you take the classical implementation of the Singleton pattern ( courtesy of Jon Skeet, so we know it’s correct), it uses static: The rest of the post will focus on the analysing the issue in depth and solving it in C#, but it probably more or less applies to other languages. Whoever is using these Singletons that have been registered in the container will receive them through an abstraction and will not be aware that this instance is being shared by god-knows how many callers.Īnd that is the way to get “rid” of a dependency on a Singleton: get the calling code to use an abstraction instead. It seems that we don’t like Singletons but still we like Singletons. It’s actually telling that all the DI containers have a Singleton life-time implementation, which is the recommended usage for all dependencies that are stateless as it will be very performant. How do we achieve this? By using Dependency Injection, of course! Singletons are not bad, but the callers should not be aware that they are calling a Singleton. ![]() Why am I doing this? Because I still encounter Singletons in the wild and some developers still think that it is a good idea it its raw form… TL DRĪ class being a singleton is be an implementation detail. ![]() In short, the problem lies with their implementation, more specifically the way it is implemented in the GoF book. I’m just to add my two cents to the fray (years later) by saying that I disagree with the principle that singletons are bad per say and try to untangle the issue. Singleton have been qualified as evil, stupid, and so on, for quite some time now. ![]() ![]() There are often problems with multi-platform games, as the release date on different devices often differs.
