Moving the notes requires you to select them, hold Shift + Up/Down arrow, and they will move up or down a semitone at a time. Moving up or down with the arrows actually changes the view position in the piano roll. Note that this only works with the Draw or Paint tool selected. Oh, and you can hit play to preview the note on its own. If you ever stuff up, just hit reset to change it back to the defaults.
